"Do you know when you'll be speaking to Haim?" a message reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're far from alone. A host of celebrated fans have publicly begged for the role.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a close gang. Their music videos frequently show them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire others to make music."

"So anyone is invited to be the honorary Haim sister."

Award Recognition

The group have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that strange liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The themes follow departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they want to be.

"I love description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That newfound toughness required a fresh approach – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

Someone left Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global following.

But the band will forever be their number one commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
